Guide

Under about 12 CBM, start with LCL. Weight can overrule that.

For FCL or LCL shipping from China, use the volume as the first cut. Under about 12 CBM, ocean LCL is usually the choice. About 12–15 CBM, price both. About 15 CBM and up, FCL is usually cleaner. Dense or awkward cargo breaks that rule. Refractory brick can weigh out a container. Mining equipment can miss the container entirely. Send weight and dimensions with the CBM, or the quote is guessing.

Loaded containers on a ship

Ask for both numbers

  • Gross weight and CBM, not one of them
  • If the cargo is brick, tile, stone, or metal, say so in the first line
  • If any piece is longer than a closed container, send the drawing before the mode

Where this shows up

  • Refractory brick to Canada, already moved, and quoted again the same way
  • Mining transport equipment, where the equipment type comes before the sailing
  • The lane planner on each country page, which still needs a person once the cargo is heavy

Questions shippers ask

Does the planner on the lane pages handle weight?

It uses CBM and the date. Weight and awkward shape override it. Write the weight in the inquiry. The desk will not price a dense cargo as if it were cartons.

Should I still ask for LCL under 12 CBM?

Only if the cargo is light enough for a consolidation warehouse. Brick and machinery often are not. Say what it is.

Send weight and cube

Both numbers. The mode in the reply follows the heavier constraint.
